The beginning of 2016 started off with beautiful bubbles.  My wine group kicked off the year with a blind tasting of bubbly from around the world.  It couldn’t have been a more fun, festive and sparkly way to begin a traditionally very dull January.  During the tasting my friend Mike told me he was celebrating Champagnuary, and I thought to myself was there even such a thing?  Well I thought a few seconds more and said to myself, why not?  What a bubbly idea! So along with Mike, I decided to make it my mission to pop open a bottle of Champagne everyday for the month of January. I plan on spending each day of the month researching, writing, drinking and immersing myself in the world of Champagne.

2015 was a fun-filled year with bubbles.  I have posted some of my instagram Champagne moments from 2015 to kick off Champagnuary.   As you can see I had fun with a lot of big name labels or negociants as they are known in Champagne.  However, Champagne is more than just about Moet, Krug, Clicquot, Perrier Jouët, and Dom Perignon. Champagne is also a story about the small farmers, producing what is affectionately known as “farmer fizz”.   Also known as “grower champagne”, these boutique Champagnes can be highly individualistic, with unique characters and can offer higher quality at lower prices.  I hope to explore more bottles of farmer fizz in 2016.

Throughout the month I will write about various champagnes, grapes, regions, wine makers, techniques, movies, books, food pairings and history.  I hope you enjoy my pictures below and keep a lookout for my Champagnuary posts throughout the month.  If you enjoy the articles please let me know and pass along any suggestions or Champagnes you would like for me to review.

Let’s see if I, or we if you join me, can make Champagnuary catch on annually across the globe.  Lets aim big, and as Dom Perignon might say, reach for the stars right in your glass, and make Champagne part of your celebrations this month.  Cheers to a sparkling January and a dazzling New Year!!
